Star Student: Travel & Tourism

After studying for her GCSE's at Whitby High School, Chloe Richards wanted to persue a career in Travel and Tourism and progressed to College where she enrolled on a BTEC Extended Diploma in Travel & Tourism. She explains why West Cheshire College was her destination of choice, and what she plans to do in the future.

When I finished my GCSEs, I didn’t want to go on to Sixth Form as it didn’t offer the enrichment I needed to be able to pursue a career in Travel and Tourism. I came to a Careers Open Evening at the College, which really helped me make the decision to study here.

I really enjoy my course – I’ve learned a lot, and I’m much more confident in myself and my customer service skills. The tutors are really helpful here, and I’ve been on a number of trips, including a trip to Abu Dhabi and to the Etihad Training Centre.

I’m progressing on to the Cabin Crew Level 3 course next year, to help me build up my customer and passenger service skills, and hopefully this will prepare me to start a career with Etihad when I’m 21.

Studying Travel and Tourism opens the door to a variety of careers including services such as retail travel, currency exchange, tour operators and tourist boards. It also covers passenger transport including coach, aviation, rail and waterways and visitor attractions such as museums, theme parks, zoos and heritage sites.

The course gives you the opportunity to develop strong communication and management skills and as part of the course, tutors will help you with finding work in the industry from making a successful application to effective interview technique.
