A former student from West Cheshire College has been offered a full-time position with Chester-based, leading UK logistics business, Great Bear Distribution part of the wider Culina Group; a market leading provider of warehousing and transportation services, after completing a sought-after Apprenticeship with the Company.
Time spent working in industry whilst studying is an attractive prospect for students but sometimes can be hard to obtain. That’s why Callum Haddock, age 20, from Ellesmere Port was delighted to be selected to participate in the Apprenticeship with Great Bear, which has now led to him being offered a full-time job working for the logistics company as a Transport Planner.
Callum who was studying a EDEXCEL Certificate in Traffic Office at West Cheshire College said: “I have always known that I wanted to do an Apprenticeship as I was attracted to the flexibility it offered. I started on a week-long work-placement scheme with Great Bear, which my College helped to set-up. This then progressed to a year-long Apprenticeship and now I’m pleased to say that I have been successful in securing a full-time job there.
“I was encouraged to apply for the scheme by my tutor, Roy Turner, as I really enjoyed learning about the practical side of my course. The whole process has been invaluable as it gave me an insight into how the industry worked and what was involved on a daily basis. Since accepting the full-time role, the knowledge I have picked-up has definitely helped me transition into the role and I’m now looking forward to getting stuck in, learning more about the industry, while working on my own personal development.”
Construction and Logistics Programme Leader, Roy Turner, said: “Great work placements and Apprenticeships can make promising futures, so we’re always so pleased when one of our students is successful and is able to make the leap from Apprenticeship to full-time employment. When you’re 17 and you’re thinking about a career you don’t really know what’s out there, but going on placements and by participating in Apprenticeships, it can give you a real taste. It also helps students better understand what really happens day-to-day in industry and the job they’re studying for”.
Karen Rossington, HR Advisor and Project Lead at Culina Group adds: “Our aim is to invest in the next generation workforce from a grassroots level and are keen to work with people who have enthusiasm and drive. We’ve been working with West Cheshire College across our work-placement and Apprenticeship programmes for some time now and are delighted that this relationship is successfully resulting in job creation for those students who demonstrate a passion for the industry and are keen to develop further within Great Bear and Culina.”
